email to João Vasco Paiva about "Wide Rothko"
Wide Rothko is an audio visual work that deals with sound and visual documents in a way to create a new kind of visualization. The work explores relations between abstractive and figurative imagery. The work consists on footage and audio recordings made in Hong Kong and in several locations in YunNan. During the process of shooting/recording, there is a search for visual and sonic structure.
The major idea follows thebasics of earlier moving image toys or visual installations like the "Panorama". Here, through a time delay and a spatial extension a new kind of visualization is created. Through the creation of patterns provided by the multiplication of the pixels in the frame, the video is displayed in a horizontal strip along the projection.
As an outsider the method of collecting cultural documentation from a determinate place becomes reduced to a comprehension of shapes, colors, sounds and the overall structure that combines them. By a not comprehension of the language (basic feature for the understanding of a culture). The idea of the exotic is explored here as the recognition of contextual familiarities but embed in different shapes and motion.
Wide Rothko is a sonic and visual abstraction of cultural materials, regarding the different connotations of several aspects common to urban and rural places: masses, landscape, soundscape, movement, flow. The piece converts the typical loop based approach to a more linear development, based on Gilles Deleuze's concept of time image, in "Wide Rothko" there's an exploration of 2d space representation and horizontally, where behind the representative qualities of the image there s the creation of a new hybrid space, the space of the image itself and the world that instead of being re created is in itself created.
